As an affiliate "Safe Community" Support Centre of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion, the Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC) offers support to assist local communities in organizing, designing and implementing occupational safety and health (OSH) enhancement schemes for residential care homes (Elderly homes, child-care centers, hostels for mentally / physically handicapped persons, hostels for street sleepers / homeless persons, treatment centers for drug addicts, halfway house / long stay care center for ex-mentally ill persons, boys' and girls' homes, hostels for discharged prisoners, etc). Residential care homes constitute a sizable community and involve several OSH hazards such as arising out of infection, violent conflicts, handling of drugs, transfer of patients, etc. If they fail to control these hazards effectively, their workers, residents and even visitors will be at risk. Launched by OSHC, the "Hong Kong Safe and Healthy Residential Care Home Accreditation Scheme" is aimed to encourage elderly homes to control their OSH hazards by implementing safety management system. Certificates will be awarded to those with outstanding safety performance.
