OSHC Designs 1st Generation of “Solar Cooling Kiosk” for Workers in Outdoor and Remote Areas to Beat the Heat

The hot temperatures in Hong Kong have been setting new records in recent years. During the hot weather season, employers should provide adequate drinking water as well as shaded and ventilated resting places to employees performing outdoor manual labour work. However, providing cooling and resting stations in rural or remote areas may encounter difficulties such as the supply of electricity. Therefore, OSHC designs the first generation of the “Solar Cooling Kiosk”, which uses solar power to run the cooling facilities inside the kiosk, and addresses the challenge of bringing electrical power to rural and remote areas. Employers can adopt the setup of the Solar Cooling Kiosk as the blueprint to arrange resting stations for workers in remote outdoor areas.

Features of the “Solar Cooling Kiosk”

●  Composed of 1 medium-sized modular house (Area: 4 m2), 4 pieces of solar panels (with 450W each) and 1 inverter and battery.
●  Supply electricity by solar power for air-cooling, ventilation and lighting appliances.
●  In cloudy days without sunshine, appliances inside the kiosk can operate for 15 hours continuously after being fully charged.
●  The solar power system and electrical devices of the Solar Cooling Kiosk are designed, installed, checked and tested by registered electrical contractor to ensure electrical safety.
●  With windows, louver doors and fans to enhance ventilation.
●  With basic furniture such as desk and chairs, drinking water, hangers and curtains for changing work clothes.
●  Can accommodate 3 - 4 people (cost is around 50,000 HKD)

OSHC suggests all employers and employees to get prepared for the coming hot weather season. If employees have to work in a hot environment, employers shall provide a shady area with good ventilation for them to rest and drink water. If the site is situated in remote areas where no power supply, employers can consider bringing in the “Solar Kiosk” as one of the precautions to prevent heat stroke. Organizations which are interested in learning more about the first generation “Solar Cooling Kiosk” are welcome to contact OSHC.
